Hello everyone, let’s take a moment to discuss my 2024 stock & ETF all-weather portfolio.

As we get started, I hope you’re having a great start to the new year. As I get 2024 underway, I’m thankful for the opportunities at a fresh new start, in so many areas of life. However, for this post, let’s focus in on the state of (and changes to) my long term portfolio.

Given the never ending uncertainty around the market and the threat of a recession mentioned at every turn, I decided it was time to dive deeper into my long-term holdings. My overall portfolio (excluding options) hasn’t changed much in several years and some of those assets are starting to stink the place up.

I’ll start with the stocks or ETF’s that didn’t make the cut and move to what I’m holding today. Here’s to a much more enjoyable ride in the years to come.

Before I go, if you haven’t already, please visit my Youtube channel and subscribe. I’ve got exciting plans for the channel in 2024 and would love to have you join me on the journey. Talk to you there!

Cutting the Fat – Eliminating Under Performers

Occasionally, I think it’s important to thoroughly investigate our holdings to see what measured up and what did not. I’m not sure if I’m the only one guilty of this, but I have been known to blindly dollar cost average into my portfolio as time goes by. However, in my defense, sometimes life just gets busy. Acceptable excuse? In any case, maybe cutting the stocks below will be a little more comfortable for the road ahead.

Lastly, I elected to part ways with many average performers from the previous portfolio as well. My goal was to avoid the mistake of keeping up with so many companies. This one’s falling, no its that one, earnings upcoming, accounting mistakes, CEO resigning, spinning off assets, stock splits, etc……it was overwhelming!

Each position below represents the total return on the asset. Meaning, any options income or dividends are also included in the final calculation.

I Hate Goodbye’s…

As you can see, I parted ways with many companies to start the new year. Truthfully, many of them would have been perfectly fine to stay and I liked their prospects for the future. That said, ultimately simplicity won the day and they had to go.

Finally, I didn’t calculate the holding time for each asset but all were initiated between 2020 – 2021 and dollar cost averaged thereafter. In retrospect, I’d have been better off just putting this money under my mattress. At least there the dollar amount would have been the same, even with inflation eating away at the value.

2024 Stock & ETF All-Weather Portfolio

Now that we’ve run through the list of positions I’ve trimmed, I’ll compile the complete list of holdings for the foreseeable future below. This is my 2024 stock & ETF all-weather portfolio in it’s entirety. However, know that the short term bonds are just a temporary cash holding ground to collect a respectable interest rate as I DCA into the other positions. I’ll also include any current gain or loss for those positions I’m continuing to hold as well.

Before I jump in, for those that may want a primer on building out a great portfolio check this article out from BankRate.com. In it, they discuss 10 different investments to build a broad but stable portfolio for the future. Coincidentally, I’ve been able to touch most of those categories with this portfolio. I guess we’ll see if their advice is of any value.

Well, welcome in…

There you have it, the 2024 stock & ETF all-weather portfolio. Honestly, I’m happy with its current shape and after several years of underperformance I’m faithful this will do much better. I’ve had an unfortunate habit of over trading and buying anything shiny through the years but I put this together to withstand everyone’s toughest opponent. Time.

Further, I’ve conducted a thorough assessment of each company to increase my confidence that this portfolio will weather every storm in the years to come. I feel strongly that they will serve as a great cornerstone to my portfolio as I continue to build from here.

Final Thoughts

I’m looking forward to far less maintenance or trying to keep abreast of changes to the number of holdings. I’ve opted to put more money into ETF’s this year which I’m hopeful is a better move than just attempting to pick individual stocks. Over the years I’ve had some good stock picks but I’ve faired far worse on many others.

Moreover, that approach requires constant work and I just don’t want to work my way to lower returns. Frankly, I’m disgusted with myself for having let it get this far before changing course. However, if your reading this and you’ve found yourself in a similar position. Keep hope and revisit that portfolio, it’s not too late. Now may be a great time to trim some unnecessary fat from your own portfolio as well.

God bless,

Jeff
